Multi-mode cavity dynamics in a leaky optical cavity



Cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) studies the interaction of atoms with the quantized light field enclosed in a cavity. A wealth of application is taking advantage of the atom-cavity coupling reaching from cavity-based quantum computing to cavity cooling of atoms, molecules and microspheres. Most of the experimental and theoretical work so far has been devoted to single transverse mode cavities. The inclusion of multiple cavity modes in the dynamics is predicted to lead to an increase of the atom-field coupling, and therefore to the enhancement of several related cavity effects, for example the capture range of cavity cooling.
In this talk I will report on our experimental and numerical findings regarding the interaction of cold caesium atoms with the light field of an optical cavity, which supports many quasi-degenerate transverse modes. We demonstrate the collective strong coupling of the atomic ensemble with several cavity modes, document the transfer of excitation from mode to mode via the atoms and explain the dynamics with an analytical model supported by numerical simulations.
