School Colloqium:

A fully scalable quantum computer within 10 years?

We are at an exciting point in the developing field of quantum technology: after decades of work, the levels of control achievable in the laboratory can now meet, or even exceed, the requirements on the theoretician's blueprints for a fault tolerant computer. Does this mean we are on the verge of achieving scalable, universal quantum computing? If so what will the machine look like? I focus on recent progress on topologically protected quantum computing, explaining the principles and relating them to some of the leading technological platforms -- these range from ion traps, though impurities in crystals to purely photonic systems.
